Concussion

Concussion has drawn much attention and for good reason, safety. Dr. Sickinger was trained at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center which is one of the leading institutions on research and treatment for concussion.

Advanced Center For Sports & Musculoskeletal Medicine is continuing a high level of care for its patients.

Concussion is now known to be a metabolic problem. From direct or indirect head forces, changes in use of energy storage from brain cells occurs.  Once an enigma in not being able to be seen on routine xray, CAT scan or MRI. And not being able to test with a physical exam or labs, concussion was a mystery. Now, with the advancement of technology and clinical trials, we are making leaps in knowledge which is reflected in todays treatment plan options.

The best model for understanding concussion is reflected below:

  • Vestibular – Problems with balance. Motion difficultly. Coordination. Movement stability.
  • Anxiety/Mood – Can’t turn thoughts off. Constant worry. Often reflecting and thinking too much.
  • Ocular – Problems with eye movement. Tandem eye movement. Tracking. Coordination. Focus
  • Cognitive/Fatigue – Difficulty with concentration. Easily distracted. Hard to retain information. Tired & slow.
  • Posttraumatic Migraine – Headache. Nausea. Sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Cervical – After head trauma with neck problems. Sprain. Strain. Weakness

Understanding where you are will guide your treatment plan and rehabilitation process.
